New Brighton, Pa. -- Beaver loses to Carlow, 2-0.
After being on the road for their first three games of the season, the Penn State men's soccer team played in their first home game against Carlow. Since losing the first 2 games in the Defiance tournament last week, the team bounced back with a 12-0 win this past Thursday against Westmoreland. Beaver has their sights set on another win in their second match of the week.
In the first minute of the match, Beaver's offense went on the attack, freshman Williams Cruz, midfielder, attempted a corner kick at 0:38, followed by a headshot by junior John Kazmierczyk, forward, less than a minute after. Four minutes in, sophomore Amsa Sanneh, midfielder, attempted a shot but it was saved by Carlow's goalie. In the next two minutes, Carlow attempted to score a goal but it was saved by senior Samuel Sharpless, who was at goal. The teams were evenly matched; Beaver and Carlow trading possession of the ball in midfield. But 12 minutes in, Carlow scored their first goal, making the score 0-1. For the rest of the first half, Beaver played well on defense but had trouble maintaining possession of the ball, and the team ended the first half down by one goal.
In the second half, the team tried vigorously to even the score, with a shot attempt by RJ Long and corner kicks from both Danylo Yakymov and Cruz in the first seven minutes. The game remained scoreless for the next 27 minutes; however, Carlow scored another goal with less than five minutes to go in the game. Then, with only three minutes left on the clock, Sanneh attempted another headshot, but it was to avail, leaving the final score 0-2.
With today's loss, Beaver is 1-3 overall for the season and will play against Southern State CC at home next Thursday, Sept. 13. The game starts at 4:00 p.m.
