Schuylkill Advances in PSUAC Tournament

ASTON, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Softball kicked off the PSUAC Tournament with a triple-header, concluding the day with a 2-1 record.

Game One: Penn State Schuylkill 6, Penn State Beaver 3

Schuylkill made a strong start in the bottom of the first as Jade Weiss (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) singled and Kaely Walshaw (Dornsife, PA / Line Mountain High School) walked. Both players crossed the plate as Mackenzie Carl (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School) singled through right field, securing an early 2-0 lead.

Morgan Kleckner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) doubled to kick off the bottom of the third and advanced to third on Alyssa Youst's (Schuylkill Haven, PA / Blue Mountain High School) single. The bases loaded as Carl walked. Schuylkill extended their lead to 3-0 as Megan Marks (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township High School) singled up the middle. Cealinn McGroarty (New Boston, PA / Mahanoy Area High School) reached on a fielder's choice, adding two more runs. Weiss's single up the middle scored another run, ending the inning with four hits and four runs.

Beaver began a comeback with three singles, resulting in three runs, narrowing their deficit. Three strikeouts by Emma Crisswell (Williamstown, PA / Williams Valley High School) in the top of the seventh sealed the game for Schuylkill.

Weiss finished 3-4 at bat with an RBI. McGroarty went 2-3 at the plate. Kleckner hit a triple, and Carl led with two RBIs.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Two singles in the bottom of the second for Brandywine set up two runs following a fielder's choice. Two innings later, Brandywine added another run after a single and a stolen base, concluding with a sacrifice fly. Walshaw, Carl, and Marks all singled in the loss.

Game Three: Penn State Schuylkill 4, Penn State Beaver 2

In a win-or-go-home scenario, Beaver scored first with a single to centerfield. In the bottom of the second, Walshaw singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Kleckner then homered to right field, giving Schuylkill a 2-1 lead.

Singles in the bottom of the third by Marks, Crisswell, and McGroarty led to Schuylkill's third run. Schuylkill hit three times in the fourth, extending their lead to 4-2 as Crisswell's single drove in a run for Carl.

Kleckner hit twice, including her home run that earned her a team-high two RBIs. Marks, Crisswell, and McGroarty also hit twice for Schuylkill. Crisswell picked up the win on the mound for Schuylkill.

With the win, Schuylkill advances to day two of the PSUAC Tournament. They will face Penn State Brandywine in another win-or-go-home scenario on Saturday, April 27th. With a victory, both teams will meet again at 2:00 p.m. for the chance to advance.
