Twelve Fall Student-Athletes Earn PSUAC All-Conference Honors
State College, PA -- The PSUAC announced their soccer and volleyball all-conference award winners as well as the John Fritz Sportsmanship Award winners earlier this week at the conference championships.
Penn State Beaver Men's Soccer had seven players earn post season honors. Earning spots on the 1st Team were freshmen, RJ Long (Alto, NJ / Winslow Township) and Danylo Yakymov (Kiev, Ukraine / Grand Private Lyceum). RJ, despite a season ending injury in mid-october, played a pivitol role on the defensive end. Danylo, who led the PSUAC in both scoring and assists (20 goals,10 assists) was also named Newcomer of the Year as well as Player of the Year.
Earning 2nd Team honors were seniors Cory Mueller (Ambridge, PA / Ambridge) and Shelton Hilliard (Baden, PA / Ambridge). Cory who was a defensive leader also netted a single goal this season. Hilliard who is another emotional leader, has 15 points on the season so far with 6 goals and 3 assists. Two freshman also earned 2nd Team honors. First was Williams Cruz (Springfield, VA / Robert E. Lee ) who has 14 points this season with 6 goals and 2 assists. Amsa Sanneh (Moncks Corner, SC / Berkeley) was the second with 22 points (7 goals and 8 assists).
Rounding out the group with an honorable mention, was senior keeper, Sam Sharpless (Conway, PA / Freedom). Sam has been a wall in goal with a goals against average of 2.79 landing him in the top five in the PSUAC.
On the women's side, four players earned honors. On the 1st Team were freshmen, Marissa King (Dubois, PA / Dubois Area) and Abbie Miller (Tariffville, CT / MLC). King, who had one goal and one assist as a defender, was a key addition to this year's roster solidifying the defensive side. Miller was on the other side of the ball, leading the team in scoring with 17 points (8 goals and 1 assist) which landed her in the top 5 in the PSUAC for goal scoring. Senior, Bukuru Edisa (Pittsburgh, PA / Brashear) rounded out the 1st Team selections finishing second on the team in scoring with 13 points.
Earning an honorable mention was freshman, Jessica Robles (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny) who distributed the well all season with 2 assists.
Women's Volleyball saw their lone senior earn an honorable mention. Brooke Tomasko (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) finished 4th in the PSUAC in kills with 266 which led her team this season.
Finally earning the John Fritz Sportsmanship award for men's soccer was sophomore, Ashish Subba (Leetsdale, PA / Quaker Valley), for women's soccer, senior, Brittany Zahn (New Brighton, PA / New Brighton) and for women's volleyball, freshman, Rae Jackson (Tampa, FL / Chamberlain)
The John Fritz Sportsmanship Award is awarded to one student-athlete per team for each sport at each campus. This student-athlete demonstrates good sportsmanship in that she displays ethical, appropriate, polite and fair behavior while participating in athletic events and as a member of their team. They exemplify the Penn State Values of integrity, responsibility, excellence, respect, discovery and community.
